What can you wash in a dishwasher? A lot more than you’d think!

Knives, forks, bowls, plates, pots, pans, and cups. These are the items we normally associate with what we can wash inside a dishwasher. And, anyway, if the subject comes up at all, it’s almost always framed as what you can’t put in a dishwasher, like wood, cast iron or aluminum.

That isn’t the whole story though. Quite the opposite, there’s a long list of unexpected items that are dishwasher, and in many cases, dishwasher detergent, safe.

Have a read – and be surprised at what you can wash in this underestimated machine.

Let’s start with dishwasher-safe stuff you’ll find in the kitchen.

  • Microwave Turntables

The glass turntables that go round and round can also go into the dishwasher. Slot them in the bottom rack.

  • Fridge Shelves and Drawers

These items are bulky, so it's best to run this load by itself. Take out the top dishwasher rack to make enough room.

  • Appliance Knobs

If they're plastic, they’re good to go in the dishwasher. Put them in a mesh bag on the top shelf before your next cycle.

What about other rooms in the house? Let’s talk about the bathroom.

  • Shower Caddies, Soap Dishes and Toothbrush Holders

Bathroom accessories, like soap dishes and toothbrush holders, build up residue, so sanitise these at least once a week. Place them on the top rack and run with dishwasher detergent.

Now how about the bedroom closet?

  • Flip-Flops

Flip-flops can be secured in the top rack and rinsed with your favourite dishwashing detergent, and that’d be Finish Quantum All In One.

The kid's room.

  • Plastic toys

Little Thabo and little Mary want in on the action too? Plastic toys go fine on the top rack and a light wash cycle (but nothing battery-operated or soft and squishy). Use a mesh bag to be safe.

The dog box?

  • Pet Collars, Leashes, and Chew toys

Don’t forget Fido! These are made from synthetic materials like nylon, polyester, and cotton, so slip in the top rack, and run them through a regular wash cycle. Never wash any leather though.

And a whole heap of other things

  • Keys

Keys are one of the dirtiest things we carry around. Clean them by sliding the keyring around one of the pegs on the top rack. Remember not to wash any electronic keys though.

  • And why not throw your golf balls in too?

Yep, really. Golf balls, and their dimples, can be difficult to clean by hand. Place them in a mesh bag and on the bottom rack.

Some words of warning though

Be sure to empty out the appliance completely, and depending on the item you plan to clean, use dishwasher detergent at your discretion. If you're washing an item that can discolour discoloration, use a detergent that doesn't contain bleach.

Be mindful that there are heating elements at the bottom of your machine – and you don’t want to damage them. So, put smaller items into a mesh bag before.

And there you have it. A surprising list of what can you wash in a dishwasher!
